Virgin Media UK Set to Take on Skype

By Saul Saresi

UK digital giant and cable operator Virgin Media have announced plans to introduce customer trials of a new SmartCall service which will allow their phone line customers with a Smartphone to use the unlimited calls feature from their home phone talk plan on their mobile, anywhere in the world.

The only requirements in order for customers to take advantage of this service are that there is a broadband internet connection and that the user has the necessary Smartphone app. The app is required in order to detect whether or not a SmartCall is possible from the user's current location.

So with such ease of use and minimal cost to set up, it seems like Virgin may be onto a winner. Graham Oxby, their Executive Director certainly believes so: "SmartCall will, in effect, stretch the telephone cord from your home to wherever you are; from Cornwall to Bali."

He also explained how: "This service will not only make our customers lives infinitely easier, but will give them more value from their subscription plan than ever before".

Virgin claims to be very encouraged by their recently completed 'technical trials' of the service and is now hoping that in opening up the service to a limited customer base in the coming weeks, the service will prove successful enough to open up to all customers in early 2013.

Virgin hopes to mount a serious challenge to the dominance of Skype, who have, for many years, ruled the marketplace with their low cost alternative to standard, premium rate, Voip service providers

But that being said, the fact remains that there are a whole host of Voice Over IP service providers out there offering any number of discounts and promotions in an attempt to secure your custom, and if Virgin's strategy proves to be effective there will be many more trying to emulate it.

Added to this the fact that Virgin are still newbies in the Voice Over IP field, and there are still a number of significant hurdles that they are going to have to overcome in order to convince customers that they are to be taken seriously and can compete in the marketplace.

So if you're looking for a Voip provider who knows the industry and can offer unrivalled technical service and support, choose a specialist with a proven pedigree and an ITSPA Quality Mark for good measure.
