A Unique Vantage Point on Team Building Strategies

By Adam Kline

Want to identify who communicates the best in your company? Want to increase team effectiveness? Try some of these team building activities! Vantage Point Consulting reviews some of the reasons for team building activities: "Strengthening employee communication and leadership not only creates a more fun and creative environment, but it also increases effectiveness in work related tasks."

Vantage Point Consulting points out that management and employees have a turbulent relationship if there is not enough work towards unification. Our goals mean the same for the company and that is a good starting point. Team building activities start with first some icebreakers and chat ups. By understanding hobbies, points of interest and favorite sports, we can present accessible rewards and a fun environment.

The purpose of this article is to share some of the best team building ideas that I Vantage Point Consulting reviewed with me in a recent interview. They are: the paper tear, the survival scenario, and the favorite - egg drop.

The paper tearing game points out the need for two way communication. Effective Communication comes from not only employees, but also management. Vantage Point Consulting reviews this activity: First off, give all of your group members a sheet of paper. It doesn't matter what the paper is, but everyone's should be the same. Then have members of the group close their eyes and follow instructions. Also let them know that they are not to speak or ask questions. Then give the group directions to fold their paper in half and tear off the top right hand corner. Tell them to fold it in half again and tear off the top left hand corner. Repeat this two more times until the bottom two corners of the paper have been torn off as well. Don't give specific directions, just tell them enough to create action. After complete, have the group open their eyes and unfold their papers. Review with the group that their papers don't look anything like yours, and comment on the need for two-way communication.

Vantage Point Consulting reviews the 'survival scenario.' A survival scenario is a desert island crash from a plane or boat. The team scavenges a crashed boat or plane wreckage and they come across a manifest of working equipment and they have to rank these items in the most useful survival tools. They have to come to a unanimous group decision within 15 to 30 minutes. Take note and review how the decisions are made, who dives into a leadership role and who is more natural to follow. If this seems too simple, change it up with each person on the crash would have to point out their skills and abilities to help people survive and how.

The last activity Vantage Point Consulting guides us through is the 'egg drop.' Employees are gathered into a place that can be cleaned easily (outdoors usually works for this one). All of the things that they need are already in front of them and ready to go. Divide the teams into as many groups as you want, and the groups then build devices that they can drop from the top of a ladder, with the egg attached, so that the egg does not break. Before the drop, the group must explain to the other groups why their device will work. You should note and review with the teams their presentation and why they picked their speaker. Then after the drop, review how the teams came to their idea. This exercise increases team communication.

To better increase employee effectiveness, Vantage Point Consulting reviews several unique teambuilding activities throughout an employee's training. These activities also help to strengthen bonds between employees in different departments and split them up from their normal 'clicks.' By using some of these team building activities, you will see an increase in morale, effectiveness, and communication.
