Massive shocks can result to tearing off of the crystals and causing cracks. It is as a result of these effects that a permanent change of the frequency may be noticed over some time.

These crystals are sensitive to radiation and more care should be taken into place. Sweeping reduces this and can be done by heating so that the crystals attain the desired degree Celsius. Through this, they become slow and will not respond to ionizing radiation.

Failures may be generated by faults in bonding, corrosion or even aging. Since these crystals do not have inherent failure mechanisms, they can be operation for quite a long time. It will therefore depend on the surrounding to some extent.

The circuits of these gadgets ought to be properly designed so as to prevent exceeding on an overtone. Since this may cause damage, care should be observed. It is the quality of these gadgets that need to be checked at so that they turn out to perform in the manner they should.
